Workplace
Workouts is a unique
fitness programme especially designed for places of work. Over a series
of weeks, fitness and aerobics instructor Tracy Griffen, delivers a programme
tailored especially for your place of work. This new idea supports the
Scotland's Health At
Work (SHAW) initiative run by the NHS, promoting healthier workplaces.
It can also be used as accreditation towards SHAW awards.
The backbone of the
programme is a 'no sweat' toning session, a workout that works all of
your muscles and is easy to follow.
No leaping about
to complicated dance routines!
No lycra!
An example programme
is below. This was created especially for the staff of
Heriothill Nursery in January 2006. Of course, each programme is different:
Week 1
Introduction to fitness, Goal setting group discussion. Hand out food
diary #1.
20-25 minute toning session
Week 2
Food diaries reporting back. Talk about effects of alcohol on health.
30 minutes toning session
Week 3
Cardiovascular fitness - why is it important?
5 minutes cardio activity. 30 minutes toning
Week 4
All about abdominals
Importance of stretching in everyday life.
Week 5
Smoking, Hand out food diary #2.
10 minutes cardio. 30 minutes toning.
Week 6
Going over food diary #2.
10 minutes cardio. 30 minutes toning.
Week 7
How to design your own fitness programme.
10 minutes cardio. 30 minutes toning.
Week 8
Avoiding temptation.
10 minutes cardio. 30 minutes toning.
Week 9
General question and answer session.
10 minutes cardio. 30 minutes toning.
Week 10
Conclusion on how everyone went. Feedback. Where to go from here
10 minutes cardio. 35 minutes toning.
Before each toning session there is a discussion on various health and
fitness related topics. For example, one week we might discuss diet, and
the following week, smoking. If there's a particular issue you'd like
programmed (i.e. ideas for dealing with stress, local classes available
etc), this can be arranged. The focus is on a group dynamic, however individual
attention is available as part of the course.
Each week builds upon
the knowledge of the previous week, with the group building up the information
they need on how they can lead healthier lifestyles. As the programme
progresses, there's less talking and more action. However, throughout
the course the underlying philosophy is to have fun!
There are a number
of benefits to be gained from this programme:
1. Individuals gain the knowledge they need to start living a healthier
lifestyle.
2. They will have been motivated by working out - feeling muscles they
didn't know they had! Exercise naturally releases endorphins, so you'll
have a happy workforce!
3. Working as a group encourages team dynamics.
4. In line with the current Scotland's
Health At Work (SHAW) initiative run by the NHS, it's promoting healthier
workplaces. This programme can also be used as accreditation towards SHAW
awards.
